Abstract:
This is an UNFPA funded project of HIV/AIDS and older persons in northern Thailand. It is a two year project from October 2003 until December 2006. The project is conducted under five collaborating organizations: Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University, HelpAge International, Foundation for Older Person's Development, Planned Parenthood Association of Thailand, Northern Region Economic and Social Development Office. The purpose of study is to explore the effects of HIV/AIDS on older persons in northern Thailand and relevant surroundings. Data was collected via field survey, focus group, and in-depth interview from multiple informants in four districts of Chiang Mai, Thailand. The findings were used to develop a model package to promote knowledge, attitudes and practice related to HIV/AIDS on older persons, health personnel and volunteers. Increased quality of life on older persons is finally a goal of the project.
Description:
This project comprises many small projects related to population and development strategies which were set in the UNFPA plan in Thailand. The UNFPA plan focuses on two major themes:

1. Issues of population and development on gender and reproductive health that might guide developmental policies and plans for
relevant projects

2. To strengthen cooperational networking structures from "north to south". The goal of this project is to address the work necessary to gain a better understanding of the symbiotic relationship between population
and the development of sound reproductive health policies. It also addresses the need for a working knowledge of gender management skills between Thailand and other countries. This program is therefore targeting the goals set down by UNFPA for the specific purpose of gaining more insightful working knowledge of HIV/AIDS infected and affected older persons in northern Thailand.

The related small projects include:
1. HIV/AIDS Impacts on older persons northern Thai elderly.

2. Health status of HIV/AIDS affected older persons in Northern Thailand.

3. Knowledge and attitude and risk behaviors of older persons in Northern Thailand.

4. Needs and received needs of older persons affected by HIV/AIDS in Northern Thailand (PI- Wanicha Pongchompoo)

5. Caregiver burden of older persons affected by HIV/AIDS in Northern Thailand.

6. Quality of life of older persons affected by HIV/AIDS in Northern Thailand.
