Projects
Household Level Effects of HIV/AIDS Mortality and the Gogo (Grandmother) Project are two interconnected projects that grew out of two years I spent as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). The first project makes use of previously collected quantitative and qualitative data from the Agincourt Health and Population Unit (AHPU) study site in the rural northeast of South Africa. The main focus of this project is to understand gendered and generational dynamics in households relating to HIV/AIDS. (See project write-up for a description of proposed analyses). For the Gogo Project, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 60 women aged 60-75 living in the AHPU study site. A major component of this study was the training of a Wits PhD student, Catherine Ogunmefun, in qualitative fieldwork.
