My research on HIV/AIDS impact on older people has concentrated on their role as caretakers for orphans. I have mainly studied how the elderly cope with the loss
of income from their working adult children and later assume the caretaker role for the orphans left behind. Currently, part of my work also looks at how the burden of supporting orphans impacts on the intergenerational relations between the orphaned grandchildren and their grandparents. I look at some other factors such as whether the presence of other productive adults in the community willing and able to assist the grandparents living with the orphans can make a difference in the grandparents-grandchildren relationships.
