Projects
The focus of this study is to generate mental health research activity in Ghana, West Africa, with a specific focus on (older) people with dementia. A prevalent condition associated with older age groups is Dementia, although it can also affect younger people. HIV/AIDS is an epidemic within Africa, mainly within the 15-49 age group and accounted for 3.5 million new infections in 2002 (NEPAD:4). The HIV virus can cause the AIDS dementia complex. Hence dementia may be prevalent in a wide range of age groups in Africa. Also, the loss of breadwinners due to the AIDS virus may directly impact on older people resulting in increased care-giving responsibilities for their grandchildren and a loss of (financial) support from their offspring (Agyarko et al 2000).
